Letter from the artist…

Thank you for your interest in my work.

My therapist asks me at the start of sessions, “What’s working?”

I love this beginning. It puts the power back in my hands and helps me realise times that I felt good or okay.

In the forest.

In the studio painting and getting lost in the pigment and water.

With my children cooking, swimming, or reading. I live for this. Slowing down time.

I am built close to the water. I cry easily and I don’t know if I’ve cried more than I have in 2024. “Welt Schmerz” is what the Germans say. Grief for what feels like grief for the earth and humanity.

These paintings came from a hard and dark place seeing genocid€ happen in Ga$a is devastating, depression spiralling.

The dirt felt like it was calling me to return. Not wanting to wake. Feeling as though those children are my babies. As I get up to paint freely in the studio and enjoy nature and my children.

More painting because it works.

More going into the forest because it works.

More being with the children because it works.

Thank you for your time and interest.

Take care,

Anna Baer

Anna Baer, Abstract Expressionist

While studying art in Uni, in 2006, I first learned about the early Abstract Expressionists pushing the envelope in the visual arts in the 1950s. They painted on large wall sized canvas, painting from the heart, from the subconscious. I knew I wanted to paint like that. At that time I painted things that were recognisable and representational, portraits, figures, hot air balloons, you know the usual, lovely things.🌻 We are taught in art school to master technique and represent what we can see. I loved Drawing 101, don’t get me wrong but damn I wish they taught intro to expression.

There aren’t any rules in abstract art. Where do I even start?

I wanted to be expressive and free like those abstract artists I saw Helen Frankenthaler, Cy Twombly. The scale, originality and stroke of the work spoke directly to my artist. Mmmm bold expressive art.

It took 4 years of art uni, 5 years of teaching art, a miscarriage, and a new pregnancy to find my voice and finally find my voice as an abstract artist. Didn’t need to go through all that, but it has definitely shaped my work as an artist. Motherhood and painting go hand in hand for me. 🥰 Until now. Seasons are changing.

During my second pregnancy I began painting the circle. A controlled shape, with wild flowing colors within. Some of the circles burst out breaking the line, exploding with vibrancy and life. I realised I was grappling with my lack of control. I couldn’t control whether this baby would make it to full term. My influence is limited but I was beginning to letting go. 🌻

Now, I paint professionally. I have been for the past 7 years. I make large and small works. Circles and other organic shapes. Letting the painting guide me. Coming into the studio daily for the process, the act of creating, but also to bring beauty and life to those who collect my work and hang it in their homes.

My work is bright and bold and life-giving. A recent collector exclaimed how joy-giving my art was and how they loved having it hanging in their living/dining room adding to the space and to the conversation. So fun to see It bringing such life to so many. I love making work that has a lot of details that can be slowly discovered over time. Getting lost in the flow is my favourite. 🌻

Bombing, strong arming and force, we know is not bringing peace,

becoming hardened apathetic to others suffering is not bringing change,

Staying soft, knowing one is made of the dust and water as the next person.

Our collective part of nature and humanity unites and liberates us.

To be pushed and pulled by the moon as the tides of the seas.

Water in and around us.

Stay soft, fluid and feeling.
