Nest in Me no.9 is somewhat tumultuous. It's somewhat, um, it was made in October, November 2023. The genocide in Gaza was full force, I mean still is. And we just have to paint through these days. Heartbreaking and often when I'm going through a mental difficulty and strain, I need to paint.
Painting is the thing that calms me down. It's the thing that brings me back to earth. It's the thing that brings me back into my hands and allows me to, yeah, feel better at all.
It's a hopeful piece but also full of struggle.

Slowly release the air from your lungs swimming to the surface. Bubbles all around me. Trusting that deep inhale will come upon reaching the surface. A slow trusting exhale. Releasing that next bit of control. Trusting.
I love how much movement is in this work. It is so fluid and non-permanent. When painting this work, actually the act of painting itself is an act of trust. Making one mark and the next, hoping for the best. Showing up to the artwork time and time again, with hope that things will work out that that composition will work out.

My previous series Lush Restraint explored the idea of control and letting go.
Lush Release is play. Sweet release. Moving the paint and adding the layers quickly moving faster than my brain can think. This season I escaped through my work. I painted through my blurry and dark days. Finding freedom in my pigments and paints.
Lush Release no.5 is so etherial and dreamy. With washy fluid paints and splatters.
It leads the viewers eye from the bottom left past turbulent dark patches to light brights up and around the top of the canvas.
It speaks of other worlds and free flowing nature.

This Lush Release no.6 hung on the wall of my studio for weeks at the mid stage almost done. Having flowed out of me. 3 or 4 visits.
Smooth no struggle. Sometimes when things are so beautiful I delay their progress because it means I have to call them finished sooner. It shows clear attachment. Too much maybe. Considering my work to be sold makes me want to keep artwork after artwork in this collection. Lush Release no.6 is no different.
It has a hopeful feeling about it. A sense of roundedness but also possibility, established elevation. Play. I love its confidence. Lush Release no.6 has my heart. She is the second of this Lush Collection of artworks being released weekly to the Studio Club.

Lush Release no.16 had me from the start I began this work towards the beginning of the collection and its boldness became a muse for the rest of the work in the collection to follow.
Though it was uncertain Lush Release no.16 would ever be completed and included in the collection. It served as a strong and open work accompanying other pieces over the 4 months of creation. Lush Release no.16, being one of the last works but one of the most beautiful and striking in the whole Lush collection.

Lush Release no.10 is a smooth work so coloroful and balanced. The space and the textural interest make the work effortlessly divine.
I had some new friends over last night and when standing infant of this painting one of them said they appreciate how colorful my work is but it is not too much color and it always has a sense of balance. He also always sees and loves a pop and surprise, perfect amount of interest and space in the work. He said usually he doesn't like things that are so colourful but my work has a fine touch and sensibility to color that he admires and appreciates. Music to my ears. Seriously.
I feel the same. To be honest I keep thinking damn this work is bright but it works. It works beautifully!

Lush Release no.12 is honestly one of the most beautiful things I have created to date.
The details and etherial nature of the work leave room for so much imagination and wonder. It will be a piece to get lost in for years by the collector and their family and guests.
Lush Release no.12 was not an easy work to make. Well on the one and it was in that when it was done it surprised me. It began as a Soft AF work from my previous collection but didn’t make it and then when beginning LUSH I added some dark dark blues and ugly yellows. Then added even more etherial layers to complete the work. When, it was suddenly, done a whole 12 months later.

I begin with a circle of water. Then begin to add fluid and raw pigments to the water. The color stays in the limits of the shape. The circle shape was the first controlled container for my spills and stains of color. My attempt at accepting the wild in life. Working on raw cotton has allowed me to stain and drench the canvas and fibres in such beautiful unforgiving ways.
When I see Wombly Wild no.10, I see that play of holding tight and letting go. Colors collide in unexpected ways. Pigments break free in swirls and splashes. Subtle and energetic calm radiating out of the work.

Lush Restraint no.15 was created with ease. Every mark and spill come clear and fluidly passed into the next hue. I began painting with water the initial shape took form. Then I added color. Dark blues and pale greens. Filling splatters with pigment. Pulling color away from other spots. Letting the work dry and rest until I visit it again. Adding depth and value to the work, rough and smooth texture.
This painting depicts my play with control and letting go in the painting process. Letting materials flow and speak while controlling them and making intentional marks.

Hush Wild no.14 makes me feel light and bright. It feels so lively and hopeful. Calm and energetic. I love the balance in the work and the focal point of the little lilac dab of paint. I love the upward motion of the work. Pours of paint and flushes almost pulsing in the fibres of the canvas.
When I see Hush Wild no.14, I think of wild nature. A progression and changing, growth and death, beyond our control. Hush Wild works speak of embracing the wild, finding beauty in the things we cannot control. Comfort in the act of letting go.

My process, like myself, is soft, receptive, and fluid. These are some of my strongest assets.
If womanhood and painting have taught me anything it is to go with the fucking flow.
I do my best, with the sphere of influence that I have. The rest is out of my control.
I hope you and I can find strength in the softness and comfort in letting go.
Hush Wild no.3 set the tone for this collection. I quite soon found I loved where she was going and knew I wanted to use light and flowy nature in works going forward.
The two stretching sides almost connect and join heading upwards. Airy spores of light green show up scattered on the canvas. One larger glob of Rusht Red oil paint hovers close to the left edge looking to jump out. The works in this collection all have beautiful easy washes of paint as well as carefully blended and scattered dollops of pigment.

My great strength is in my nature, in my feminine softness and flow. No strong arming here, just empathy, expansion, and powerful surges of soft energy flowing from me.
I haven’t always been grateful to be a woman in life. It has felt like more of an obstacle than a part of me to celebrate. This work is changing me. Teaching me, I am woman. Proud to be Soft AF!

Pale pink is scientifically the most calming color. This piece has a peaceful and calm, adventure within it.

Lush Restraint no.11 reminds me to let go. It is beautifully fluid and wild. My process uses several materials. Inks, oils, acrylics, raw pigments, spray, pools and splashes of water. I soak and stain the raw cotton, scribble and dollop paint and pigments onto the fibres. The quiet flying shape on the top left side reminds me of upward motion, change, release. Lush Restraint no.11 work with all its contrast gives me hope.
A recent collector said my work is an ever changing picture in their home. They mentioned their appreciation of the movement and stillness in my work. I love noticing this in my work. The reminder to be moving but at times stop, rest.

Some works, I begin them with a bit of a plan and idea. Lush Restraint works start with no plan. No shape or idea of where the work is going. This work, Lush Restraint no.10 kept asking for the dark darks and light lights. Layers and textures, minerals, and mountains. It asked for connection and disconnect. It surprised me every visit. It still does.
I love the light lights encroaching into the darks the pinks swimming in deep blues.

Hush Wild no.5 connects me to ancient times. I was lost in the layers while making the work. Adding a quick brush gesture of white in the right bottom corner before bleeding into it with the dark dark blue. My process is intuitive, spontaneous, both loose at times and other time meticulous and built up.
Humans had long been making art before we ever began planting and practicing agriculture. We made art before we were this type of human, homo-sapien. Isn't that wild to think about. No wonder I feel most me at the canvas, pushing the pigment around on the raw cotton. Making my mark. My mind and heart flowing out of my hand and brush. Flow.
This week's work is Hush Wild no.5 whispers of earth, of layers, being part of a long history long before me. One with the dirt.

These lively and wild prints have a narrative quality to them. As if they tell a story. A story of confusion and floating in a space-scape and then being in all this wild together with someone else. The first print is titled, "Where The Fuck Am I?" One floating white circle in the wild spacescape of color, the second reads, "Right Where I am." Where one larger white circle on the top right and a smaller white embossed circle in the dark blue. The circles cut out of the plates to create the crisp white embossed circles.

This work is on natural raw linen. Very thin, transparent linen.
Motherhood turned me, representational artist, into abstract expressionist. Losing my first baby in miscarriage exposed how little control I have. Grieving, freed me to let go and create intuitively and improvise in the studio. Painting with a detailed plan and total control felt almost wrong to me.
My aim in the studio is to ebb and flow with the process, be present, and play with the paint, play in a serious manner, as children do.

These works on natural unprimed cotton are unforgiving and somewhat tumultuous. I begin by painting a circle of water... Then add pigments, at times liquid, other times soft pastel. I give and take color. Then I let the first layers/washes dry. I return to the work the following day and add details and textures. At times adding water again and pigment and other times painitnng somewhat dry. I try to listen to the painting and add what it needs and asked for. I also try to listen closely for when it is done. These as all paintings have a danger of becoming overworked.
“The work evokes genesis, beginnings. There is a trembly, nascent quality to the form. Its name, Wombly references Cy Twombly and is also a cheeky reference to pregnancy. Its shape and color scheme evoke the Earth, and the fluid quality of the colors also are reminiscent of embryonic cell division.
The broken or empty parts of the shape and the splatters elsewhere on the canvas seem to indicate movement or story. It is as if the work is frozen mid-process, not unfinished, but a single frame in a time-lapse. It is a painting that anticipates.” - Sarah Ben Olsen

The text in my painting is stream of consciousness writing. Writing stream of consciousness makes me present with my thoughts and the painting. The writing is not supposed to be legible, it is used more like line and texture in the work, it is a practice of getting into the work. It is a way of clearing my head and being here, present. It makes the work personal and expressive.
I love the large scale also because it encourages me to work freely. Working from my shoulder rather than my wrist. My work is a large statement work. It often is the focal point in a collector’s home. My collectors are often first time collectors because my work is affordable and approachable. I love making work that has a lot of details that can be slowly discovered over time. They have this life-giving piece of work hanging in their home adding to the space and to the conversation.

It is part of a body of work that is playful and free. It is a large piece that encouraged me to play and let go in my process. When returning to the painting time and time again to work on it further, the painting kept saying “don’t worry, don’t overthink it, play.”
The underpainting is a stream of consciousness writing painted with India ink and black gesso. There are layers upon layers in this painting. Acrylic and ink and then the black text written in a circular motion, and then white gesso covering under-paintings writing scratched into it. Then more layers of acrylic and spray.
They Said, Play no.02 has both free marks and drips of paint, as well as detailed layers of intentional brush strokes. The piece has immense detail when observed closely, it plays with both control and chaos. It is a delicate and subtle balance of intention and letting go.

These works on natural unprimed cotton are unforgiving and somewhat tumultuous. I begin by painting a circle of water... Then add pigments, at times liquid, other times soft pastel. I give and take color. Then I let the first layers/washes dry. I return to the work the following day and add details and textures. At times adding water again and pigment and other times painting somewhat dry. I listen to the painting and add what it needs and asked for. I listen closely to when it is done. These as all paintings have a danger of becoming overworked I wanted them to be somewhat effortless and primal.
“The work evokes genesis, beginnings. There is a trembly, nascent quality to the form. Its name, Wombly references Cy Twombly, and is also a cheeky reference to pregnancy. Its shape and color scheme evoke the Earth, and the fluid quality of the colors also are reminiscent of embryonic cell division.
The broken or empty parts of the shape and the splatters elsewhere on the canvas seem to indicate movement or story. It is as if the work is frozen mid-process, not unfinished, but a single frame in a time-lapse. It is a painting that anticipates.” - Sarah Ben Olsen
